Huawei P20 Pro | Still great in 2019?

Our long term review of Huawei’s brilliant P20 Pro shows how this tri-camera smartphone has aged over in 2019 – months after the Mate 20 Pro’s launch, is the P20 still worth picking up? Well, I’ve been using Huawei’s flagship mobile full-time again to see if I still love it, ahead of the EMUI 9 update and the imminent UK release of the P30 Pro.

First up, that camera tech hasn’t aged at all. Besides the shonky image stabilisation at 4K level, the P20 Pro still captures incredible-looking results. Night snaps are of course its highlight, but this phone is a wonder for parents too.

Performance and battery life haven’t suffered in the long term either. A full year on, Huawei’s Kirin 970 chipset still does the job, helped by GPU Turbo for PubG Mobile. And while we’re still waiting on Huawei’s latest Emotion UI update, the P20 Pro offers a feature-packed experience.

Check out my review to see what I think of Huawei’s flagship in 2019, and stay tuned for my full coverage of the P30 smartphones!

iphone user (since ever) thinking to change to huawei… Does huawei has the function/app of making videos easily with photos? I mean… like in iphone, you if you have an album and then you make a video with music ("they name it "souvenirs") so it makes this beautiful video with music that the photo change in the exactly moment of a change in the sound/music… does it make sense?

I bought mine "as new" in a shop in Germany still with plastic wrapping on…..knocked him down from 399eu to 350eu (£300). Im amazed at the phone. A MASSIVE upgrade from my Samsung J20 Pro.

There are still 2 decent reasons for wireless charging:

    1. If you're away, it gives another option for charging as it is there is some chance that friends with newer iPhones may have a charging pad

    2. This happened to me a few years ago when I had the Galaxy S6, the microUSB port stopped working, but the device was still possible to use as I could use the wireless charging. Saved me from having to buy a new phone immediately!

Are Huawei still bad with security updates as well as android/emui updates? Tempted to by as a little bored with vanilla OnePlus6 but slightly concerned by this!

Worth upgrading from my samsung s6… 32gb memory not enough? Need something with a better camera more battery etc for my long travelling across europe. And a decent price. The Mate seems a wee bit to expensive for me.. Don't care about wireless charging. Does it have a 3.5mm jack for normal headphones? Cheers

What we Really NEED is a follow up review after the EMUI 9 update, I think battery life and especially the camera have suffered a huge hit, the ultra sharp images you mention in this video are pretty much no more.

That phone apart from the camera is absolute crap. You won't get a proper GPS signal from either Google maps or even Waze. Also keyboard is lousy and you would get some screen and app freeze that would just won't start or work.
Also you will often get stopped from downloading any apps because your "cache" keeps on being jammed and overlaoded….. That phone is a camera NOT a phone! Don't buy

How much £/pm was the P20 pro when it first came out? On average? Looking to get an idea of what the price will be for the P30 pro.
P20 pro is £33/pm at the moment on EE excluding the 20% student discount.. Bargain

Just got my p20 pro on a very good price, as of now: 500€. It's the black version tho, not so impressive but good looking nevertheless.

I've immediately updated it to android 9. I come from Galaxy S8 and I think the screen on the p20 isn't as good as the S8's but still a very nice screen.

Overall I like the phone, smooth as silk and very fast in any app. Haven't tested that much the camera yet but I look forward to it.

What screen protector do you have fitted? Nearly ever one I have tried ends up with grey edges where the it fails to stick. Loving my P20 Pro, I have migrated from Samsung after many years and not regretting it.

USA, I have Pie for about a month now. Really love my P20 Pro, it remains among the king of camera, rivaled only by its close cousin the Mate 20. The primary sensor might even be a little better!

i have had this phone since July last year, and im onto my 2nd one already as the first one just kept freezing randomly, the camera is the only good thing about this phone, the lag is so bad when on the likes of Twitter, insta etc, it wont connect to my wifi at home sometimes, its actually better on 4g, my wife and daughters have iPhones and there BF's have samsung and one plus 6 and these phones by far out perform the Huawei P20 Pro. this is probably the worst smart phone that i have ever had, i currently have an iPhone 6 for work, which has so much more performance in it, and that phone is like 3 years old. In my opinion this phone should be priced at the budget market as its not good and prone to freezing up.
