Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus & Rode VideoMicro mic – external microphone test

The mount used with the phone is by Ulanzi, it’s the version with the cold shoe mount in the top for the mic. Here are links to it on Amazon. Amazon USA Amazon UK & Europe

This video is a simple test of the Samsung Galaxy S9+ recording audio from an external microphone, the microphone being used is a Rode VideoMicro.

Although this video is specifically an external microphone test, it also shows the video capabilities of the S9’s front facing camera. There’s a few focus issues going on as I’ve used the standard Samsung video recording app in fully automatic, although this may be a good demonstration of a real world scenario for vlogging on the S9 plus in fully automatic mode and what’s to be expected.

I’ll also be doing some more mic tests with various microphone types, condenser, dynamic, lavalier and shotgun types.

David – which model attaches to the galaxy s9plus?  that's the one thing you don't show in the video – how it links into the phone?  How do I know which model to purchase? thanks!  Dani

Dave, great vid. What pistol grip system do you use with s9 plus? is there a separate mount you need to go with the grip if so which would you advise using? Cheers. Andy

Buddy working on the flyer can be sometimes very frustrating I have the Galaxy S9 and I've just purchased the new crane 4 gimbal for smartphones check out the reviews on YouTube and you can clip your microphone to it I give it five out of five you can even zoom without ever having to touch the screen on your phone 5 add 5 it will solve all your problems it's available on Amazon from the 5th of April

    Great video David.

Looking forward to seeing a mic comparison between the built in mics, the Video Micro, and perhaps a more expensive external microphone.

Out of interest, where did you buy the phone? Did you buy sim free from the UK or did you buy it on contract? I always stay clear of contracts as I find them a little too restrictive.

Dave, is the phone audio ‘normalised?’ Reason I ask is that it has clarity but not the presence of the in room mic. Obviously no reflections but tbh, it’s not too shabby. Probably needs a little more in the bass outdoors. It’s amazing how it’s picking out that kid in the background given the distance in comparison to your voice. Picture looks nice. Bit flat in comparison to the Yi but actually, the Yi looks a bit dark and saturated.

You’re definitely getting much closer with a phone. You could use it easily but as it stands, I think I’d do a bit of post. Up the contrast a small amount and bass boost. I think that would then work beautifully.

Trouble is, I know that you’re trying to avoid post stuff, but I think the phone is an improvement and certainly has more potential if you have the time and inclination to adjust it.

For my Sonys, I have a kind of preset already set up so sharpen and contrast happen automatically so I don’t notice it. For you, just contrast and bass and I think you have a great picture and sound.

Amazing auto metering when you did the circle. It stayed pretty much even so it’s really not touchy at all. I think my Sonys would alter tones on a full circle once even a shaded sun threatened to move into frame. The phone did well.
